The early nickel die cast hoops and hardware show normal signs of aging with some plating loss on the strainer. It operates smoothly with the original arm. The Max Roach Model badge is still present and even cooler is that this drum is autographed inside by none other than Hal Blaine. It sounds beyond amazing and is a true pleasure to play with that Great Gretsch Sound. This would be a shining star in any great vintage snare collection or studio. It also includes matching 4.5x14 snare and canister throne. The 20\" Zildjian A Medium Ride cymbal weighs in at 2816g. The 14\" Zildjian A New Beat Hi-Hats are ink stamped \"Special Selection\" on the bottom, and weigh in at 888\/1330g. Barrett was known to often wright \"GOOD\" on the bottom of his cymbals that were deemed worthy of his use, as well as \"B\" for Barrett. Armand Zildjian would hand select cymbals at the factory for his top tier artists that he was personally friends with, as he knew the sound they wanted. For a select few (Buddy, Gene, and Barrett), he would hand stamp their initials into them. The ride and the bottom hat both have \"BD\" stamped into them, making them just as historically cool and important as the drum set. It even retains it's ultra clean Ludwig slunk snare side head with clear original ink stamps.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe set is all original including the heads. It's in excellent overall condition. Like many drums of this era, the 14\"x16\" works well with the original calf heads or modern vintage-fit heads, and regular modern heads would fit very tightly and are not advised. There are some small stains on the top of the bass drum from where the rubber bumpers of the gorgeous \u003cmeta charset=\"utf-8\"\u003eNo. 1100 Ludwig Universal Trap Rack rail rests on it, but they're not very visible when the rail is attached which is how you'd always want to play or display it. The hardware has some minor wear but still displays beautifully. The seams are all flat and the wrap has aged beautifully. The original internal mufflers still work great. The 3912 (December 1939) internally stamped bass drum has the original red felt exterior front muffler as shown.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA fun detail on the 13\" and 16\" toms are the factory drum key holders (they can even be seen in the 1940 Ludwig catalog), and included are the original era Ludwig script drum keys. The bass drum is outfitted with original multi color blinking lights that bring sparkle to your performance, as shown in the video. The snare drum still has the original Gretsch wires and heads, which still sound fantastic. All of the tone controls (top and bottom) are nice and fully functional, as is the original Jimmy Pratt bass drum muffler. There are a few commonly seen small incidental splits that naturally occurred early on in their life as seen in the pics, only one of which is visible when the heads are on (located at the seam of the floor tom), but are extremely stable, flat to the shell, and have remained the same for decades per the previous owner who had them since the '80s.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThese drums look and sound like a dream! 1950s Gretsch sets like this without extra holes or mods and all original calf heads appear once in a blue moon, especially in this sparkling White Marine Pearl, so seize the moment! John Goode (executive VP and resident drum designer for DW) had this set built for Besse using wood purchased from them as a gift to show their appreciation for their strong working relationship, which Besse proudly displayed in the boardroom of their corporate office in Gladstone, Michigan for over twenty years, virtually unplayed. The chrome hardware displays gorgeously with minimal signs of age. The set was born together at the Oxnard, CA factory with internal date stamps of OCT 10 2002. The snare drum is a Ten and Six all-maple shell, and the MAG throw off functions smoothly. There are no extra holes or modifications and the bearing edges are true and original. There is one tiny imperfection in the form of a small ding on the bass drum (see pic with finger pointing it out). Extremely densely populated 5A+ exhibition grade birds-eye maple of this caliber has grown extremely scarce over the past 10+ years, has consequently become much more expensive, and the vast majority of it has no where near the dense figuring found on these drums. Most importantly, it tunes up with the greatest of ease and sounds exactly how you'd dream the very best of the best DWs would sound.
