Ludwig produced just a handful of these gold-plated Super-Sensitives as personal gifts to some of the most influential drummers of the era, including Ringo Starr, Bobby Christian, Dick Schory, George Gaber, and Joe Morello, and this is Morello's own drum, complete with an engraved nameplate bearing his name. After joining The Dave Brubeck Quartet, he became the driving force behind the group's rise to worldwide fame throughout the late 1950s and 1960s, and it was Morello who created the instantly recognizable 5\/4 rhythmic figure underpinning \"Take Five,\" still one of the best-selling and most influential jazz recordings ever made. He was voted Down Beat magazine's best drummer five years running and remained one of the most respected drum educators and clinicians in the world until his passing in 2011. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis drum began life as a standard Ludwig Super-Sensitive, the model Ludwig revived in 1961 around a solid brass shell, individually adjustable snare wires, and the smooth, precise parallel-action P-88 strainer that made the Super-Sensitive a favorite among working drummers of the day. For this special short run, Ludwig finished the brass, triple-flange hoops, and all other hardware in 24-karat gold, and fitted a small, engraved gold nameplate to the shell, transforming a workhorse drum into a one-of-a-kind trophy piece built specifically to honor Morello's artistry.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt is of our opinion that this drum is arguably one of the most important and sought after collectable Ludwig drums in music history, 2nd only to the exact same gold snare presented to Ringo the same year.
