For your intense viewing delight is this fabulous 1939 Ludwig & Ludwig Super-Swing set in Avalon Pearl. This spectacular pre-war outfit is a collector's quality time capsule in well cared for condition. This could (and probably should) be used by a fine movie house, as it's a quintessential textbook example in every way of what would have been seen during the period, with all of the original accoutrements, not to mention the amazing internal flashing bass drum lights and buttery original calf heads. The vivaciously eye catching custom front bass head shows that it was owned by the Stuart Haas Orchestra's drummer in Kalamazoo, MI during the dance hall era. This collector's dream is truly one-of-a kind, and all of the original "bells and whistles" are included to boot. The set is exactly as it came to us, and has not been cleaned or polished by us. Should someone choose to give it a little extra shine, it will clean and polish up to look even nicer than it currently does with minimal effort.
The jaw dropping No. 61 Super-Swing Model 8x14 matching solid shell single ply snare drum has an internal date stamp of 3906, indicating a June 1939 build date. It even retains it's ultra clean Ludwig slunk snare side head with clear original ink stamps.
The set is all original including the heads. It's in excellent overall condition. Like many drums of this era, the 14"x16" works well with the original calf heads or modern vintage-fit heads, and regular modern heads would fit very tightly and are not advised. There are some small stains on the top of the bass drum from where the rubber bumpers of the gorgeous No. 1100 Ludwig Universal Trap Rack rail rests on it, but they're not very visible when the rail is attached which is how you'd always want to play or display it. The hardware has some minor wear but still displays beautifully. The seams are all flat and the wrap has aged beautifully. The original internal mufflers still work great. The 3912 (December 1939) internally stamped bass drum has the original red felt exterior front muffler as shown.
A fun detail on the 13" and 16" toms are the factory drum key holders (they can even be seen in the 1940 Ludwig catalog), and included are the original era Ludwig script drum keys. The bass drum is outfitted with original multi color blinking lights that bring sparkle to your performance, as shown in the video. This feature has the added benefit of providing a slight amount of heat to the bass drum, which keeps the heads in tune with temperature changes. There are no extra holes or modifications, and the bearing edges are true and original.
