For your prime viewing pleasure is this fabulous 1971 Ludwig bop set in original Blue Sparkle. While Jazzettes were unique in that they were exclusively made with 12"x18" bass drums with center rails, this kit features the equally, if not more, rare 14x18" bass drum with traditional off to the side rail location. It comes to us from extraordinary Chicago native jazz giant George Fludas, and is in fantastic condition aside from some honest play wear including some rash in one panel of the 12" tom, and a few other tiny scratches. Overall this set is in excellent well taken care of condition. As was sometimes the case at the Ludwig factory, stock of certain shell sizes would inevitably get moved to the back of the pile and get pulled out at a later time to be grouped for a factory set. Such was the case for this set, as the 12" tom has a factory label with a date of "11 71" (November 1971), the 18" bass drum has an internal stamp of 1971, and the 14" floor tom has an internal stamp that reads May 13 1968. Although the 14" shell is date stamped '68 and the other two drums '71, they all have close 6 digit 1971 serial #s and the 14" has an even closer # to the 18" than the 12", indicating the set was surely born together and all shells wrapped and badged together at the factory in '71. The clear interiors on the 3-ply shells are clean, the bearing edges are original and true, and the '70s Ludwig pointy blue & olive badges are nice and tight. The original hardware, including round knob mufflers and rail mount, has aged well. There are no extra holes or modifications on any of the drums. Most importantly, the set tunes up like a dream. It nails the quintessential bop vibe in spades when tuned up high and an amazing fusion/funk thing going on at lower tunings. Enjoy!
