For your extreme viewing pleasure is this incredibly rare M.A. Wintrich snare drum from the early 1900s. Max A. Wintrich was the Principal Percussionist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra from 1900-1930 during which time William F. Ludwig Sr played along side him from from 1916-1918. Wintrich was a very well known in his time and was also a builder and inventor, receiving a patent for a drum tensioning system that likely served as the inspiration for the iconic Frank Wolf "2-to-1" snare drums which we included in the photos for your enjoyment.

This beautiful 9x16 snare may be the only one of its kind, and is certainly the only one we were able to find online. It's a 14 lug single tension nickel over brass drum that has a wood reinforcement ring in the center where the tension rod guides are attached.  The heavy brass claws appear to have been made by Walberg & Auge as do the thumb screws which are the same used by Leedy and Ludwig during this time. The period correct gut snares are in great condition and are attached to a 1920s Ludwig & Ludwig strainer that was used on their street drums. There are two holes under the strainer where the original was installed and one extra hole beside the butt plate where a larger version was previously installed. There is an internal muffler that is fully functional, presumably added in later decades. The wood hoops have aged very well and on the batter side a brass badge is affixed reading "M.A. Wintrich Manufacturer Chicago ILL". It has more modern Remo drum heads on it and tunes easily. This drum is truly unique, displays beautifully, and would be at home in the finest of collections. Enjoy!
